Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile to Enter PC Retail Market

Posted by superstar23 on September 19, 2008

Deutsche Telekom AG, Europe’s biggest telephone company, said it will enter the laptop PC retail market, offering a “one-euro netbook for everyone.”

The T-Mobile wireless unit will start reselling Acer Inc.’s Aspire One notebook for one euro in November to users signing up for a 24-month contract, the Bonn, Germany based company said at a press conference in the city today.

“We are massively entering the notebook market,” Philipp Humm, head of the T-Mobile unit in Germany, said at the conference. “Mobile data transmission is a mass market today. We’re growing disproportionately to the market in this segment.”

Deutsche Telekom is betting on mobile data as a source of growth as its domestic market declines. Germany’s Bitkom industry group predicts telecommunications sales in the country will drop 1.2 percent to 66.5 billion euros ($96.4 billion) this year.

The company will offer Apple Inc.’s iPhone for 569 euros without a contract, Humm said today. The price includes a 100- euro calling credit.
