BANGALORE: Shying away from the crowded market Franchise India Holdings Ltd (FIHL), an integrated franchise solutions company, has decided to set out on the path less taken by Indian retail chains and set up shop in offbeat sectors.

The company, which is known for providing consultancy services to other retail biggies, has tied up with Pasta Mania, a casual dining chain in Singapore, Just Cuts, an Australian salon chain and Thai chain Spa Siam and Kip McGrath Education Centres to roll out India-specific operations by 2010 in the casual dining, personal grooming and education segments.

It has already kicked off three stores Pasta Mania specialty outlets in Pune, Delhi and Ahmedabad and plans to set up additional 12 eateries by March 2010.

Food and grocery currently contributes to around 70% of the total retail sales. We do not want to set into verticals which are over crowded,” FIHL president Gaurav Marya.

In the health, beauty and wellness segment, the company has picked up 33% stake in Just Cuts, an Australian salon chain with 400 outlets worldwide. FIHL will roll out 75 salons across India by 2010. The company has also tied up with Thailand based Spa, Spa Siam and plans to set up 50 point sales point for products and roll out 10 spas across the country by 2010.

The company has also picked up 50% stake in Kip McGrath Education Centres, Australia-based tutorial institute, which has 680 franchises in 20 countries.

“Tutorial vertical is largely unorganised and has great potential. We will establish 40 institutes in the next 5years,” added Marya. The tutorial business in India is pegged at $5 billion.

Besides, the firm is in talk with fashion brands and home décor companies in Europe. However, Marya refused to give details on the same. FIHL also plans to raise money by the end of next year to fund its expansion plans
