Landmark Group:
Landmark Group is one of the largest Business Group of Middle East. It has almost 35 years of Retail Experience with about 800 stores and 10 million sqft of retail space. Knowledge about this group is important to us as it is also growing in India with a very fast pace.
Now when we are talking about Landmark group, don’t confuse it with Landmark Book Stores (which is subsidiary of TRENT after they purchased majority stake in it i.e. 76%). This Landmark group from Middle East is the mother company for brands like:
Home Center
and many others, which will be mention later with detail.

The Landmark Group work on the philosophy of “Customer Comes First”, which inculcate a value to Carefully listen, Constantly adapt, Always deliver in the organization. Mickey Jagtiani, chairman of Landmark Group is focused on these three pillars which organization thought are responsible for their success.
The Landmark Group, founded in 1973 with a single store in Bahrain has grown into one of the largest retail conglomerates in the Middle East and is expanding rapidly in India.
Below are statistics which can give better idea of Group’s success –

The Landmark Group works under different formats. We will discuss all formats one by one, but before that it is good to mention here that Landmark operation can be broadly classified into 3 categories.

It comprises of 12 retail concepts –

– Home Center

– Gourmet Station
– Max

– Shoe Mart International

These concepts are basically tested in GCC countries and now Group is extending them in other countries by giving affiliation.

2. Landmark Hospitality:
Although it is in infant stage but it is making a great impact on the industry with its different labels.
– Fun City
– Food Universe
– Citymax Hotels
– Spaces

3. Affiliates:
The Landmark Group has affiliate retail entities in India, Spain and China. Stores in India include
– Lifestyle
– Landmark International
– Home Centre
– Max Retail
– SPAR Hypermarkets
– Fun City
– Food Universe
Currently Shoe Mart operates in the Spain market.

Landmark India
Understanding the growth potential in Indian retail sector, Landmark Group invested heavily for its expansion plan in India. Group entered India in 1998 with the opening of Lifestyle store in Chennai a year later. The Group has 110 stores across India in the form of Lifestyle, Home Center, Max, Fun City and International Franchise brand stores. In Hypermarket segment they have SPAR Hypermarket.

1. Lifestyle:
In GCC it is concept for fashion brands exclusive for today’s free spirited women with a tagline “What a women wants”.
In India it is positioned as youthful and vibrant store which offer truly International shopping experience. It offers more than 250 brands in 5 categories, that are – apparel, footwear and travel accessories, home décor and furniture, infant wear and basics, cosmetics and perfumes.

2. Home Center:
A specialty store and a one stop destination for furniture, home ware and soft furnishing. In India they conceptualized a model of “Concept Room” which comprises of bed, living and dining rooms and other accessories.

3. Max:
A large format value retailing store which was a huge success in GCC launched in India with the same spirit of offering international shopping experience at affordable prices. It offers clothing, footwear, home furnishing and accessories.

4. Spar:
SPAR opened its first hypermarket in India in Bangalore in Sep. 2007. it also opened a supermarket in January 2008. SPAR has more than 15000 stores in 34 countries.

5. Funcity:
An entire family entertainment destination with 3 entertaining zone – Play zone, Game zone and Party zone.

6. Centerpoint:
A concept which is not yet introduced in India. This concept is working greatly in GCC and Jordan with 53 stores. It is a mix of Group’s other retail concept i.e. Babyshop, Shoe Mart, Splash and Lifestyle under one identity to give consumer a ‘a single destination shopping experience’.

7. Babyshop:
One of the oldest concept of the group which is not yet introduced in India. A one stop shop for all kids needs. Caters the need of kids of 0-16 years and has 4 distinct departments – clothing, baby basics, toys, nursery furniture.

8. Shoe Mart:
A specialty store which offers footwear and accessories has 96 stores in GCC. It offers footwear of its own brand with many International brands as well like Puma, Bata (Italy), Barbie, Clarks, Ecco, Filanto, Hush Puppies, Imac, Lee Cooper, and Reebok. With its International Footwear division it also offer International brands to open their stand alone stores in GCC.

9. uniQue:
An up market retail specialty store offering house wares, furniture and home accessories.

10. Landmark International:
It was founded in 2004. This division offers assistance to international brand in introducing them in GCC countries. It opened standalone stores for them and at present have about 90 stores.

11. Food Universe:
A food division of the group, established in 1998, caters the growing demand of International food due to growth in tourism in this region. It also takes franchise rights from other international players. One of its franchisor is Sanjeev Kapoor’s ‘The Yellow Chilli’.

12. Gourmet Station:
Tantalizing fusion of retail food product, theatre kitchens, exotic cuisines and unique eat-in dining offerings.

13. Spaces:
The unique mix of brands that offer specialized services by Spaces include Hairess(hair & face), HairessToo!(girls’ salon), Groom(mens’ salon), Qi Mantra ( massage) ,Strip (hair removal) and Browhaus (brows& lashes) which have been franchised from the Spa Esprit Group of Singapore.
Commencing operations in August 2009,SPACES will roll out into the entire GCC and India soon
